As I first read on Nolo's blog, Solar Activity has been quiet lately, which has scientists wondering if we're headed for a serious cooling trend while once again, claiming the biggest controller of climate change is the sun. Who knows. I'm on the fence with this issue. You'll want to read the comment section as well for continued discussion. This article also contemplates the same thing.
Then there was the recent warning from the UN about possible food rations for the middle class.
And if that isn't enough, if you're able to stomach more (my mind's spinning at this point), here's an interesting piece that predicts the heart of our economic crumbling will be visible come September 2008.

I really think it's time for people to give themselves a reality check, as in what they'll do when the fabric of society begins to unravel, and nothing can be relied upon, and we're on our own.
We seem to be in the beginning phase of total collapse. The monetary aspect is being manipulated behind the scenes, but what got to me today were all the sudden food shortage and crisis headlines. Notice the recent jump in prices all over the place?
I know. Whenever I go to the store, I walk away with sticker shock. It's actually becoming a topic of conversation in the food aisles.
In the midst of all of this uncertainty, however, I believe in my heart people would pull together. Recent history shows us when we can't rely on the government, we turn to one another. This does actually create room for tremendous opportunity for new ways of living. In so long as we don't have military personnel and police on every street corner dictating what we can do and where we can go. That is something I am much more concerned about than an economic collapse.
